Why do I write? Because it makes me feel better, lighter, and helps me look at life differently. It allows me to understand things I wasn’t seeing before. I write because it’s part of my way of expressing myself; instead of telling one person, I tell many people and share—sometimes overshare. Why else do I write? Because I like to draw lines, but sometimes those lines are empty and no longer mean anything to me. I then grab a notebook, sit down, and turn those lines into words. I write longhand until all the words are on the page and I feel empty. The saddest thing is that I often cannot read all the words back. Most of my writing is now done on the laptop or on my phone. I write where I stand. It allows me to empty my brain of all sorts of ideas and thoughts that clutter the walkways of my mind and block the expression of colorful lines. Why do I write? Because it is fun. I can do it in silence, concentrate, and let my imagination run wild as it slowly evolves on the page. It’s enjoyable, but it’s also a way to sort ideas and helps me define concepts into a reality I can share. In the peaceful environment of my studio, I draw and write in silence, with just the sounds of the street below or the seagulls flying too close to my open window. All the words on the paper make me want to write more words on a page or lines on a canvas. I love the physical activity of both writing and drawing. Those are activities carried out with the whole body, engaging the individual in the quest for the meaning of life and all things.
