I worked primarily in oil to bring the portrait to life, layering it over a background of acrylics that deepen the atmosphere. The face emerges from the surface with carefully balanced tones of soft beige skin, contrasted by sharp, defined features—the eyes large, framed with thick dark lashes and bold black outlines. The hair is a deliberate division of color and texture; one side rendered in deep blue, the other in vivid red, both built with dynamic brushstrokes. At the center lies a vertical strip of metallic gold foil, creating a tactile, reflective surface that interrupts the matte surroundings and draws the eye inward. This gold detail, combined with the acrylic pouring technique used in the hair, adds an unexpected complexity to the layered composition. The background remains muted, a dark ground that allows the figure to hover between the realms of abstraction and realism. Emmy’s Golden Divide explores the tension between separation and connection, inviting a quiet contemplation of the boundaries that shape identity. The process pushed me to integrate gold foil with fluid acrylic mediums alongside oil painting—a combination that brings a subtle mystique and textured depth to the work.
